About Daily Pencil

Manuscripts fail for reasons that can be named. Daily Pencil covers those reasons and the industry that judges them: sentence craft, structure and revision on one side, agents, imprints, advances and contract clauses on the other. The readership is people writing books and people who work on them, including debut novelists, memoirists, ghostwriters, freelance editors and agents' assistants trying to learn faster than the job teaches.

The work here is analysis and explanation. A piece takes something opaque, such as an option clause, a royalty statement, or why a middle act sags, and lays out the mechanism with examples. Editors and agents are quoted on the record where the topic allows it. What we refuse is straightforward: no motivational posts, no promises about how long a book takes, no vendor list dressed up as advice, and no advance figure repeated without a source.
